Sundance Presents: LGBTQ+ Womxn’s Representation in Film
The number of queer womxn with speaking roles in the top-grossing films from 2014-2019 clocks in at a paltry 0.5%. Shocked? Where are the stories that center queer womxn? Too often these stories are under-resourced and not well distributed, but that’s starting to change with films like My Name is Pauli Murray and Ahead of the Curve. Each film centers a strong queer woman who has worked intersectionally to advance LGBTQ+ womxn’s representation across movements. Imani Rupert-Gordon, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights, speaks with both filmmaking teams about what it means to bring queer womxn’s stories to light.
