NCLR says “when opponents of reproductive health target Planned Parenthood, they target us”
(San Francisco, CA, April 13, 2017)—Today, President Trump signed a resolution allowing states to withhold Title X family planning funds from health care providers that provide abortion care. This resolution overturned a rule enacted by the Obama Administration that prevented states from denying Title X reimbursement to qualified providers. NCLR Policy Director Julianna S. Gonen, Esq. issued the following statement in response:
“When opponents of reproductive health care target Planned Parenthood, they target us. The National Center for Lesbian Rights strongly condemns H.J. Res. 43, signed today by President Trump. As outlined by NCLR and 29 other LGBTQ organizations in a recent letter to congressional leaders, Planned Parenthood and other reproductive health care providers are critical sources of care for LGBTQ people. Not only do they provide a welcoming and judgment-free space in which to seek care, many of these health centers have added LGBTQ-specific services to meet the needs of our community. By opening the door to the removal of Planned Parenthood from public family planning programs, those who pushed this measure through show that they value politics over people’s health and lives.
H.J. Res. 43 is just the latest in a string of measures taken by Congress and the administration this year using the Congressional Review Act (CRA) to eviscerate critical health, safety, consumer and environmental protections that have broad public support. NCLR’s Washington, D.C. office will continue to work on the ground every day to elevate the needs of the LGBTQ community within the highest levels of government.”
