(Palm Springs, CA, March 19, 2014)—The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) is proud to announce its annual Dinah Weekend celebration on April 5th honoring the progress that has been made in the movement for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender equality.
This year’s event is shaping up to be the best yet. More than 200 people from across the country are expected, with special guests including actor and producer Meredith Baxter of “Family Ties” fame, author and professional football player Chris Kluwe, and comedian Fortune Feimster, well-known for her appearances on the “Chelsea Lately” show.
NCLR Executive Director Kate Kendell and NCLR Senior Legislative and Policy Strategist Geoff Kors will provide an update on NCLR’s groundbreaking legal work, including its lawsuits to secure the freedom to marry in Utah, Idaho, Florida, Tennessee, and Wyoming, and its work to protect young LGBTQ people in states across the country from the dangers of so-called “reparative therapy.”
“This is an amazing opportunity for the LGBTQ community and our allies to come together and celebrate our successes and raise awareness and resources to make the most of this moment in history,” said Kors, who resides in Palm Springs. “Having won the case that brought marriage to California in 2008, NCLR is now focused on winning marriage nationwide and ending discrimination against LGBTQ people everywhere.”
Since its start in 1977, NCLR has embraced every aspect of the diverse LGBTQ community through its work, recognizing that the community comes from many different backgrounds and faces a wide range of issues. NCLR has always been on the cutting edge of legal and social issues, and was the first legal organization to create permanent projects for same-sex binational couples, LGBTQ asylum seekers, LGBTQ elders, transgender people, LGBTQ farmworkers, LGBTQ youth, low-income LGBTQ people seeking services from legal aid organizations, and LGBTQ athletes and coaches.
The event will be held on April 5, 2014 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Kors’ home. Learn more about the event and get tickets at www.NCLRights.org/PalmSpringsTickets.
