(Washington, DC) Today, At-Large Councilmember David Grosso introduced the Community Safety and Health Amendment Act of 2019, a bill that would decriminalize both the sale and purchase of sex in Washington D.C.The bill is co-sponsored by At-Large Councilmembers Anita Bonds, and Robert White, Ward 1 Councilmember Brianne Nadeau and Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen, and is being advocated for by the Sex Workers Advocates Coalition (SWAC), a coalition of sex workers and advocates.
Statement from Senior Policy Counsel Tyrone Hanley:
The criminalization of sex work puts Black and Latinx transgender people at risk of harm by the police and community members. Supporting transgender people means addressing the violent and oppressive systems that harm them. This is why decriminalizing sex work is a critical LGBTQ issue.
